Dental veneers, also sometimes referred to as laminates, are thin tooth-shaped shells that are adhered to the front outer surface of visible teeth. They can be fabricated from both composite resin and porcelain, however porcelain veneers are more popular due to their strength and stain resistant qualities. Porcelain veneers are a highly popular cosmetic dental treatment because they are a conservative way to treat a number of cosmetic concerns. Additionally, they can be used to enhance a single tooth or an entire smile.

How are dental veneers placed at my Hemet cosmetic dental office?

dental exam for veneers

At your Hemet cosmetic dental office, dental veneers are generally placed within two dental appointments. The first appointment is necessary to discuss your cosmetic goals, prepare the teeth for veneers, and obtain the information needed to custom fabricate your veneers.

To prepare your teeth, Dr. Formica will anesthetize you to keep you comfortable. Then, he will remove a thin layer of enamel from the front surface of your teeth. This is an essential step to ensure that the veneers can adhere smoothly to your teeth and have a natural appearance. Depending on the type of veneer used, varying amounts of enamel may be removed or skipped altogether.

Color matching for veneer application

Once the teeth have been prepared, the next step is to take a dental impression or dental scan to obtain information for the dental lab to fabricate your veneers. Dr. Formica will also use a shade guide to determine what color the veneers need to be to blend with your smile or to improve discolored teeth. In some cases, temporary veneers may be placed at this time while you wait for the permanent restoration.

The second appointment will occur once the dental lab has finished making your veneers. During the second appointment, your temporary veneers will be removed, the permanent veneers will be checked for fit and color, and then the permanent veneers will be adhered to your teeth.

Do I need to follow any special instructions after my appointment?

There are no special instructions you will need to follow after your appointment. However, between your first and second appointment, you may experience some tooth sensitivity. This will generally fade once your permanent veneers have been placed.

After your permanent veneers are placed, you will simply need to care for them like you would your natural teeth. This means brushing twice a day for two minutes and flossing once a day. Additionally, you will want to avoid damaging behaviors like chewing on ice or pens, biting your nails, or using your teeth to open packages. If you grind or clench your teeth, you may also need to consider a dental mouth guard to prevent damage to your veneers.
